Were the early New England gravestone carvers influenced by the discovery of unearthed Pompeian art?
Ancient Pompeii was discovered in 1748AD and produced tons of well preserved paintings featuring naturalistic scenes of trees, figures, etc.. These look stylistically similar to cherubs, urns and Weeping Willow trees carved in relief on American gravestones from the same period. Is there a connection?
The Pompeii excavations promoted a classical revival because of heightened interest, but you have to realize that there were large quantities of Roman art around in easily transported images from the Renaissance revivals and other classical teaching methods of art. While Pompeii was startling in what it showed about what was in people's homes in the luxury suburb of Rome and in the detail of the preservation of details of daily life - the forms that would be used on gravestones were not new and most copies would have been done from existing material.
