Options to Memorialize a Loved One
In the pre-computer age, memorials were pretty much limited to headstones, a notice of death in your local newspaper or a mass card. Most times, only the well-connected or well-known received more public notice. An industry mogul or longtime volunteer at a hospital, for example, might merit a staff-written obituary in the local newspaper.
Nowadays, memorializing a loved one, no matter how humble that person might have been, can be done in any number of ways, and be as personal as you’d like it. From bumper stickers, to memorial stickers on your car window, to posting photos and video online, remembering a loved one, as you remember him or her, is a matter of just finding precisely the medium that suits your purpose.
Survivors of veterans even have access to conflict-specific web sites that offer all sorts of ways to remember those who served. For example, at one, a book compiled by school students of the personal stories of Wisconsin Korean war veterans can be purchased.
Memorial afghans stitched with angels and poems are popping up at funeral receptions as gifts. T-shirts bearing the loved one’s name and dates of birth and death are often seen. You can have a tree planted to grow in tribute to a loved one, or name a star after him or her. Along Route 1 in the Bethany Beach and Fenwick Island, Del., area, is a series of benches, each placed there as a memorial. They bear the person’s name and other inscription, and offer rest for pedestrians or bike riders who are passing by.
Common are web sites where you can post your condolences or a tribute in your own words. Generally linked to local newspapers, these allow people to sign a guestbook that can be sponsored to keep it online as a tribute, and also offers other means of remembrance, such as posting photos.
National sites can be useful, but some communities have strong ties that a local site of memorials can maintain. As we move into a global economy, the desire to celebrate what is unique in a specific community often grows stronger.
An example of a local memorial site in Pittsburgh is Pittsburgh Obituaries. Started by a former newspaper editor and reporter, the site offers an obituary writing service. Recognizing that writing, particularly about a loved one, is difficult for many people, owner Margi Shrum puts her writing skills to work in creating a word portrait of the deceased.
