9 Reasons why Green Burial Is Better than Traditional Burial

Some people may consider the act of cremation already to be more environmentally friendly due to the lack of land use in most instances and the frequent lack of a casket or the use of an alternative container (one made of cardboard, particle board or another easily biodegradable material), there is a group that is concerned that cremation contributes to air pollution by releasing dangerous chemicals into the air during the process of burning the remains. A green cremation or direct cremation, however, is considered more environmentally friendly because the body is cremated quite soon following death without first being embalming.

The lack of embalming assuages any fears of releasing toxic fumes caused by the formaldehyde or other embalming chemicals into the air. Studies conducted in the United Kingdom have found that toxins released into the air during a direct or green cremation are considerably fewer. Those studies have compared the environmental benefits of green burial against the statistics of traditional burial.

Let’s look at the facts:

1. 56 million people die each year around the globe.

2. 60 million Trees are cut down each year in order to build caskets.

3.  16 percent of the mercury emissions in the United Kingdom are the result of gasses released during cremation.

4.  1.6 million tons of reinforced concrete is introduced into United States soil each year in the construction of burial vaults.

5. Each year, North America puts enough metal into casket production to build the Golden Gate Bridge.

6. The production of materials used in traditional burial (plastics, glues, chemicals for embalming, caskets and petroleum-based products) all take a marked toll on our earth’s resources and contribute to the pollution of the planet.

7.  Embalming fluid is designed to slow or stop the production of natural enzymes. Initial studies in the United States have found that these same properties inhibit the growth of necessary bacteria and enzymes present in the soil which are required to sustain life.

8.  By 2040, the number of worldwide deaths is expected to double.

9. By 2038, available land for cemetery space will be gone.

While still rare in the United States, in other places, this form of burial is more readily accepted. This trend is becoming increasingly popular in the United Kingdom where, already, over two-hundred direct burial cemeteries have been established.

While the United States is conducted similar studies, morticians and scientists in the United Kingdom have made vast strides in studying the environmental effects of traditional burial and cremation.

The world has changed a lot over the centuries. The tools that we use continue to develop and improve, our beliefs and attitudes shift, empires rise and fall, fashions come and go. We build, we destroy, we restore and we develop.

However, one thing is constant, people will be born, and people will die. Overall, we celebrate life and, in most cases, we don’t care to think about death. We are creatures of action, of existence, of growth. We hold on to our lives and many of us try to fill each day with as much as we can. We are beings who strive for permanence. But, all the while, we know that, in time, everything we build will eventually fade and every life will, ultimately end.
