Cremation Process Casket

Can the process of cremation or fire destroy DNA?

A body in a wood casket 6 feet deep has how long? before DNA can't be extracted.

I don't know how long with would take to degrade most DNA after burial (remember they can still extract DNA from Neanderthal skeletons thousands of years old, so some will hopefully stick around). Very small amounts of DNA are required now for extraction, with PCR (polymerase chain reaction), small volumes can be amplified to a sensible concentration for lab work.

I think fire would do a good job. DNA is more delicate than a lot of compounds in our body (although it does a good job of looking after itself while we're still alive, and can put up with quite a lot in the lab), and would be no match for extreme heat which is enough to reduce even our bones to ash. The first things to go would be the hydrogen bonds holding the double helix together and then the covalent bones would also be broken and a mess of atoms and smaller compounds released.

Am I aiding you with a crime, perchance?
