Funeral Casket Arrangement
Are adult children responsible for their parents funeral arrangements?
Back story :
My natural father left my Mother and me when I was 8 years old. He visited me and paid child support for one year.
Then he abandoned me.
I didn't see him again until I was 15, and he took me to get my braces put on.
I saw him once a month for 2 yrs to get my braces tightened, then he left again.
I saw him 8 yrs ago, after my child was born, and have not spoken to him since.
My StepDad, who raised me since age 11, called me this morning and said that my natural father had died, and I am his next of kin. His twin brother bought a burial plot for them both.
Am I responsible for paying for his casket and Funeral Services?
This man beat my Mother, nearly killed me, twice, and abandoned me as a child, twice.
I have forgiven him and moved on, but now old ghosts are haunting me.
What do I do?
You don't have to, but you might want to for your own peace of mind. Then you know YOU did what you thought was the right thing and unlike him has integrity. I wouldn't spend a lot. Cardboard is good, especially after a heavy rain. At least the jerk took care of the braces. Maybe he was not all bad. He was the one who missed out. His twin brother had to buy his grave.
