What species of fish is a Pleco?

Clearly I am a novice.
I walked passed my oscar in an aquarium shop, he darted out of an old urn, followed me ....... now we are great chums.
As for knowledge I'm learning as I go.
The Electric Blue was given to me to keep the oscar company.
Pleco's are great in a tank with an oscar....just make sure the pleco is quite big (as well as tank - make sure you have the room for one) and has logs or similar that it can fit in but oscar cant.
- Pleco's are armoured algae eaters (catfish family) they have bony plates everywhere on their body except their underside, their skin in like a really tough leather and not an easy target for Cichlids as they move quickly too.
- Pleco's grow quite quickly and can grow to around the 45cm mark though i have seen bigger.....you can get all different colours (gold spot, gold, stripped, normal etc)
- They eat blood worms, algae and vegies along with any left over food on the bottom.
I have had great success with Pleco's and Oscars along with other American's and African Cichlids.
Another Catfish that goes well though grows BIG is Salmon Catfish....they eat everything in the tank so no prob's with left over food etc..they just dont eat algae.
