Knowing Your Pets Surgery Costs Beforehand
More and more surgeries are being made available to help our pets as technology and education constantly improve. But this has been driven due to the demand our society has had for the care of our pets. They are family; our loved ones and we will do anything for them.
It wasn’t long ago that veterinarians were not performing many of these surgeries. Our society has changed and is willing to pay for the improvement of our pet’s lives, many times no matter the cost. Most pet owners feel the responsibility to care for our beloved pet just as we would a loved one of the two-legged variety.
One thing that has not improved over the years is the veterinarians comfort level when talking price and explaining all the costs. The after care is easier to focus on and quite frankly the most important aspect of your pet’s recovery after the veterinarians job is done. But after the surgery a pet owner can be standing with a bill in his hand significantly higher than the original estimate.
Initially pet owners typically inquire as to the “why” their pet is in whatever situation and the “how” to best fix it. These are things most veterinarian are capable of communicating accurately. Costs can be extremely high for surgeries and the emotions pet owners experience can be quite overwhelming. It is perplexing that some veterinarians fail to give the pet owners’ details of all the potential costs involved.
During the initial consultation one should ask their veterinarian or specialist surgeon for a complete breakdown of all the charges that will be or could be run. Many times there are additional costs of blood work, consultations and supplies that are not mentioned to pet owners but may be necessary before and after the corrective procedures.
As Dr. Elena Pederson, DVM, PhD of Advanced Anima Care Hospital in Las Vegas states, “Don’t be afraid to question about medication(s) or specific types of procedures. True professionals will be able and willing to give you a proper explanation.” Pet owners should be able to establish with their veterinarian the full costs of the surgery or procedures being recommended. However, be aware there can be unexpected costs that are impossible to know up front related to complications in the surgery or unforeseen pet abnormalities but these tend to be the exception and not the rule.
If the cost is beyond a pet owner’s ability to pay at once it doesn’t hurt to ask about arrangements of a payment plan. This should and can be done ahead of time leaving one less anxious and stressed, allowing the owner to focus on the pet’s recovery.
Have a healthy pet and being able to do the right thing is the end of the day is the result all pet owners' are looking for in tandem with their veterinarian.
