The deepest roots of Valentine's Day lie in the pagan festivals honoring Juno, the chief Roman goddess and protector of women and marriage and Lupercus, or Faunus, the god of fertility. Both festivals were held in mid-February to celebrate fertility, marriage and the return of Spring. The celebrants would sacrifice goats and dogs because of what people perceived as their strong sexual instinct. The names of all the eligible young girls would be placed in an urn, from which the eligible young men would draw the name of their love and possible marriage partner. The festival also honored Romulus and Reemus, the kings of shepherds and brothers who legend says were raised by a she-wolf and later founded the city of Rome.

The first official Catholic Church commemoration of St. Valentine's Day, which honors the patron saint of love, young people and happy marriages, is believed to have taken place on Feb. 14, 496 A.D. Although there are many variations on the story, the church's celebrates the lives of three different men with the name Valentine. One legend holds that Valentine was a priest beheaded around 270 A.D. by the Roman emperor Claudius II for refusing to renounce his faith and for helping the Christian martyrs who were being persecuted at the time. Another says he was a priest who defied the emperor by marrying young lovers in secret after the emperor outlawed marriage for young men as a way to build his army. The third says Valentine was imprisoned and fell in love with a young girl who visited him before his death. He is believed to have sent the first official "Valentine" when he wrote her a letter signed, "From your Valentine."
Modern Practices
Today's celebration of this holiday started in the 17th and 18th centuries, when people sent notes and small gifts to friends and family. As postage became more affordable, hand-drawn and hand-painted cards became popular. These were commonly adorned with feathers, shells, dried flowers, fake jewels, ribbons and lace. The 1840s brought the first mass-produced cards to U.S. stores. According to the Greeting Card Association, this day now accounts for 25% of seasonal greeting card sales led only by Christmas, with over a billion cards sold each year.
